Translated Title:

The lodge of freemasons "Saint Andrew to the three sea-roses in Hermannstadt" (1767-1790)

Summary:

In Tansylvania, freemasons were present between 1749-1790, that means almost during the whole period that they existed in the Habsburg monarchy in the 18th century. There were around 350 freemasons in Transylvania, a relatively high number compared to the weak economic and social development of this province. Many of the members of the lodge in Hermannstadt (Sibiu) were not of transylvanian origin. The composition of the lodge shows that the traditional segmentation of the transylvanian society in ethnic groups and estates could be overcome, at least at the top of society.
